Fitting and Support for the Larger Sizes

Fitting and Support for the Larger Sizes

(5 days)

This five day Plus Size Bra-Making Class is designed for advanced or professional bra-makers. This class is designed for those who want to improve their skills to make beautiful and fashionable bras, for plus sized women OR for plus sized cup sizes on a smaller frame.

You will learn how to change the seam lines and use fabrics, trims, and support elements such as slings and power bars to create supportive, well-fitting bras specific to the needs of the plus-sized women or larger cup sizes. This is a five day course focusing on the construction and re-styling of Pin-up Girls Bra patterns or a drafted bra pattern only. No other garments will be considered.

You must already be sewing bras (no beginner bra-makers!) in order to take this course. This is NOT a course for someone who is unfamiliar with sewing up the Pin-up Girls bra patterns or a drafted bra pattern.

Machines available for rent for students who do not wish to bring their own machine. Machine rental is $50 for the week.

$900.00 CAD

Please note:

• Class begins at 10 am and ends at 4:00 pm. Doors open at 9:30 am.
• Bring your lunch or you can buy lunch out. We have a fridge, sink and microwave in our classroom kitchen.

What you get in the class

You will get pre-printed class notes for this class. You will also get the fabrics, elastics, findings and hardware to make bras for your model.

Skill Level

You need to be making bras already in order to take this class. This is not a class for beginners, but for someone who is interested in making bras for other women or who wants to really hone her bra-making skills. You should be familiar with the Pin-up Girls patterns and their construction.

Lesson Plan

Plus Size Bra-making is a week full of learning about what plus sizes are (there are two types, you know) and what specific needs they may have. You will learn what fabrics are best for these women and how to maximize support by using power bars, slings and collars. learn how to draft these elements in the first day.

On the second day, you will learn how to re-draft the pattern for plus-sized women in order to have the very best support and the most opportunities for shaping. Learn what changes you need to make if the client doesn’t want wires. (It’s not a matter of just leaving them out!) You will also have the chance to measure real plus sized women who are in your class. Learn to identify individual issues, and know when to use padded straps, or the support elements.

Today’s the day to start sewing! Once you go through the fitting sheets and do all the alterations to the pattern, you are going to sew up a bra for your partner. Sometimes in the class, we have lots of “models” to choose from but sometimes we only have one to go around! That’s not a problem, as sometimes you can learn more from one model as you can from multiple partners.

We continue sewing to get the bra ready for fit-testing on our model. The mock-up needs to have enough finished on it so we can try it on with confidence. If you do not sew the elastics on, the bra fitting will not be as accurate as it could be. Learn to read the wrinkles as we do the fittings on the model.

Our last day in Plus Size Bra-making is studying some of the issues particular to the plus sized bra market. You’ll solve the problems like the Omega shaped breast, or the low contour breast. Both of these issues are seen over and over again in the larger cup and band sizes. You’ll learn some impressive alterations for these issues so you can make bras for these women with confidence.

This class was so helpful. I’d run out of options for buying bras due to my size. I signed up for this class as a last resort before agreeing to a reduction. The instruction given was so clear, concise and non intimidating. My first bra looked store bought! Now I not only have escaped surgery but can also make matching bras and panties in cute colors that fit wonderfully! That’s something I’ve never experienced in life.
