Yellow Polka Dot Bikini – Polka Dot Fabric

Do you remember the song from the 60’s “Itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini“? Well I do, and one thing has puzzled me for years. Was the “yellow polka dot bikini” in question made from fabric that had a yellow background with white or other colour of polka dot fabric? In other words, was the fabric like the left or the right below?

Or… were the polka dots yellow and the background white or some other colour, as shown below? Hmmm….are you thinking about that now?

I have had some spirited debates on this very subject in my swimwear classes, but alas, the question had never been satisfactorily answered, in my opinion..until now. As you may recall from my last post, I took my Master Swimwear students on a field trip to Ann’s fabrics on the mountain in Hamilton. If you’ve never gone to Ann’s, it is definitely a must-stop if you ever come to Hamilton. Three floors of fabric and two of them are swim and dance spandex fabrics! Sorry, I got carried away….Remember this picture I took of their purchases?
